10 Things To Do In Galveston
The Strand: Galveston’s Historic Strand District is a great place to shop, dine, and find entertainment. The Strand dates back to the late 1800s/early 1900s, and many of the buildings you see on The Strand are more than a century old. The Strand is made up of 5 blocks and is filled with things to do and see. An important note: you must pay for parking. There are paid lots, or you can parallel park and pay by text, phone, or website.
Moody Gardens: Moody Gardens is such a fun place for tourists to visit, and it is also a favorite for locals. Moody Gardens is primarily made up of three pyramids: The Aquarium Pyramid, The Rainforest Pyramid, and The Discovery Pyramid. I definitely recommend setting aside a full day to see everything Moody Gardens has to offer. While it is a little pricy, it is one of my family’s favorite things to do in Galveston. Texas Seaport Museum: The museum is located at 2200 Harborside Dr. At this museum, you are able to board the 1877 ship, Elissa. You can walk right on the deck of this National Historic Landmark. A museum and theater is right next to the Elissa where you can take a deep dive in her history. For hours and admission prices, click here.
Stewart Beach: While Galveston has numerous beaches, Stewart Beach is always a favorite. Stewart Beach is set apart from the others because it has lifeguards, showers and restrooms, a snack and drink bar, volleyball courts, and a children’s playground. Find more information on Stewart Beach here.
Pleasure Pier: Pleasure Pier is located right on the Seawall in Galveston, and it has an assortment of entertainment activities to keep you busy. The pier has 16 rides right over the water. You will also find games like ring toss or lucky duck. When you have soaked up all the fun on Pleasure Pier, you can head to Bubba Gump to dine right on the pier. The assortment of activities makes Pleasure Pier one of the top things to do in Galveston.
Lone Star Flight Museum: Anyone who is interested in the history of flight is sure to have a good time at this flight museum. The Lone Star Flight Museum has plenty of offerings to keep you busy for a day: flight simulators, airplane hangars, 27 hands on exhibits. You are even able to book a flight in a Warbird plane! Bishops Palace: Bishop’s Palace is a Victorian style home from the 19th century that is registered as a National Historic Landmark. Although this probably won’t appeal to kids, it is one of the top things to do in Galveston for history buffs. Self guided tours are offered daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
Moody Mansion: The Moody Mansion is another favorite for history lovers visiting Galveston. This four story, 28,000 square foot home was built in 1895. The Moody family was extremely influential in Galveston, and their financial empire included banking, ranching, railroading, and hoteling, among other things. When you visit the Moody Mansion, you will have the opportunity to tour 20 rooms that help tell the story of a powerful Texas family.
The Bryan Museum: If you are hoping to learn more about Texas history, The Bryan Museum is the place to visit. When visiting, you will find more than 70,000 pieces that tell the story of Texas and the American west. The Bryan Museum has permanent exhibitions, but be sure to check their website for limited time, special exhibitions. If you’re looking for a look into Texas history, this is definitely one of the top things to do in Galveston.
Schlitterbahn: If you’re looking for a place to cool off and splash around, be sure to check out Schlitterbahn. The waterpark has something for everyone, from a lazy river to thrilling slides, the whole family will have a blast here. You will also find restaurants and souvenir shops scattered throughout the park.
